Steven Zelin Talks Taxes

It’s not often you are treated to live music at an ASIFA-East event, and it makes it doubly special that our special guest was not only a talented song-writer but a fully certified CPA at that!  Introducing, Steven Zelin, the Singing CPA!  Steven has been speaking and singing at our annual Taxes for Artists for three years running now. Steven is a certified public accountant with a unique gift for creating compelling song parody on what is often a mundane topic. Opening the night with “If You Don’t Like Paying Taxes (Clap Your Hands)”, and  ”When You’re Filing”, Steven discussed deductions for freelancers, retirement planning, the importance of record keeping, estimated taxes, and the MCTMT tax.  One of those deductions is health insurance. The majority of freelancers and small business owners do purchase their own health insurance.  As a Sole Proprietor or a Single Member LLC, this is deductible as an adjustment to your adjusted gross income on your individual 1040 tax return.  Cobra payments count as well.  What else is deductible?  Specifically things that are business related.  Things like travel, phone/communication, accountant fees, professional dues and memberships (like ASIFA-East’s dues), business meals and entertainment, automobile expenses, office supplies,...

Minds in Motion

February 20, 2012
By

Written by Christopher Siemasko. Do you remember the way it felt the first time you saw your animation moving on its own? That is the experience that the Jacob Burns Film Center is bringing into elementary schools all over Westchester.  Each semester, their Minds in Motion program divides a 4th grade class into groups of 8, each producing an animated film. Volunteers are assigned to each group to act as producer and cheerleader.  After 12 weeks of hard work, the kids are invited to their own red carpet premiere at the Jacob Burns Theater in Pleasantville. The program was developed by JBFC Animator-in-Residence Joe Summerhays.  In addition to teaching, he runs a commercial shop with clients like HBO Family, Viacom, Jazz at Lincoln Center, AOL, Houghton Mifflin, Schlossberg Design, Tribeca Film Festival, and IBM. Joe is a charismatic teacher who introduces filmmaking with stories, jokes and magic tricks.  Slyly worked into the program is a bit of math, critical thinking and public speaking. He digs right into story on the first class.  “When I started out, we used to spend six weeks teaching them animation, then we would do six weeks working on story. Then we flipped it, starting...

“Sugar” by Katie Cropper

February 8, 2012
By
Sugar 1

Katie Cropper’s short film Sugar seems simple enough upon first glance, but it possibly has some more complex undertones to it. It begins with a simplified landscape, forming with sound waves. After the shapes form, we see a colony of ants roaming around the shapes, and then the scene morphs into the ants eating a large apple and other fruits. From then on, the next two scenes show life evolving without the ants, and then the ants are floating in outer space. Since ant colonies are often compared to large working groups of people, it seems like an automatic...

Help Solve the Mystery of Marie Jocelyne

February 3, 2012

Some of you may remember my story on the Queens International Film Festival, or the subsequent DA investigation into numerous fraud allegations against Marie Castaldo, the woman behind the festival.  Or you may remember the Arnie Diaz Shame, Shame Shame segment,  or her arrest on animal abuse charges – also documented by Arnie, and the eventual guilty plea that led to her deportation. For the past five years, Martha Shane (Producer and co-director of Bi The Way) and Dan Nuxoll (Program Director of Rooftop Films, co-producer of Kiss My Snake) have been chasing down Marie Castaldo: convicted criminal, alleged...

“Boy” by Steven Subotnick

January 19, 2012
By
Boy2

Warning: Well not a warning really. It is author’s opinion that viewers watch the clip before reading the description. It is not required, just a way to take in the effect of the film. Boy is an animated short film that takes a very unusual approach. Steven Subotnick  manages to take what seems like so little, and succeeds at expanding it into something more. In this case, drawing letters on a single piece of paper, and finding ways to manipulate them in humorous and musical ways. Everything is manipulated from just one piece of paper. All the animation in...

A Visit with Animator Dustin Grella

Animation is sometimes a messy business: Dustin Grella during production

Interview By Richard Gorey This month, I visited with animator/filmmaker Dustin Grella, whose film Prayers for Peace won an ASIFA East award (and several others) last year. I’ve been speaking with several East coast animators, asking them how the industry has been treating them, whether or not a career in animation is still viable for independent filmmakers, and what their relationship with their work means to them. Dustin’s films are personal, sophisticated in their visuals, and elegantly emotional. I visited Dustin at his studio/home downtown a while back, and got a glimpse into his process. I hear he...
