On Feb 10, GKIDS is opening the animated feature Chico & Rita at New York City’s Angelika Theater with the directors in attendance for Q&As all throughout opening weekend. The film – a love story about two Cuban musicians and immigrants set in the late 1940s/early 1950s – is up for the Academy Award for best animated feature at this year’s Oscars. This is a wonderful opportunity for ASIFA NY members to check out the film on opening weekend and participate in these Q&As. After all, it’s not every day that you get the chance to see and meet Oscar nominees.
Oscar-winning director Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque, Calle 54) and Spain’s legendary illustrator Javier Mariscal celebrate their passion for the music and culture of Cuba with an epic story of love, passion, and heartbreak.
Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey – in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero – brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.
The film was recently nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards, and opens exclusively at the Angelika Film Center in New York on February 10, and expands around the country in the following weeks. You can learn more about the full list of theaters on the film’s Facebook page. (Movie is unrated, intended for adult audiences.)
Group discounts are available; you can contact dave@gkids.com for more information. Tickets are also available for pre-order.”
