In high school Doug received the first edition The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston for Christmas and, by the time he finished reading it, decided to become an animator.
He studied at RISD and, during that time, learned of ASIFA–East and interned for Michael Sporn. After graduation he moved to NYC and a few years later enrolled at CalArts, where he studied under Jules Engel. His final semester was interrupted by the Northridge earthquake and Doug was forced to temporarily move home to Connecticut, which turned out to be a fortuitous event, as he met the woman who is now his wife.
He returned to finish his thesis Charivari, an abstract figurative representation of the opening act in the Big Apple Circus, where he worked for a few seasons as a roustabout.
Moving back to NYC, he had a successful 25+ year career as a 3D computer artist, working at over 40 studios. Some highlights are an Emmy, a win at Annecy and a film shown at MoMa. He has also taught at Pratt Institute, NYU/Tisch, SVA and SUNY Fredonia.
These days he’s a middle school teacher, focusing on design and technology, in the NYC public school system. This leaves him plenty of time to devote to keeping ASIFA–East the premier animation organization in the northeast and personal projects in the summer.
