SUMMARY:Looking at Jerry Lewis The Nutty Professor Storyboards
DESCRIPTION: \n\nLooking at Jerry Lewis The Nutty Professor Storyboards\n\n\n\nThrough March 3\, 2019 The Museum of Modern Art\nFew stars from the golden age of the Hollywood studio system valued looking—and being looked at—more than Jerry Lewis (1926–2017) did. Having amassed years of stage experience before he emerged as a major film actor and director\, he made acknowledging his audience an essential aspect of the “comedy of looks” that characterized his work. And in no other Lewis film is the experience of being seen so central as in The Nutty Professor (1963)\, in which he treats his audience as a main character. In this adaptation of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story\, his dual performance as the self-effacing Professor Kelp and the narcissistic Buddy Love represents different sides of the Lewis persona\, and the onscreen student and nightclub audiences who witness his behavior represent the gaze of the moviegoing public. \nA recent gift to the Museum\, John Lauris Jensen’s storyboards for The Nutty Professor are graphic interpretations of the script\, suggesting elements of performance\, staging\, lighting effects\, camera placement\, and cutting continuity. The 11 storyboard sequences on display here anticipate the look and experience of the motion picture\, skilfully expressing Lewis’s intentions as both director and performer.

The “Copyright 101” will be presented by Elissa Hecker\, Contributor of the legal chapters of “The Profitable Artist”. The workshop will take place online on Tuesday\, November 20\, 6:30pm-8pm EST. \nAs a creator\, it is important to be able to make a living from the hard work you devote to your original works of authorship. You should have the right to control what others can and cannot do with your works\, with a few exceptions. Often\, however\, the legal and business aspects of what to do with art before\, during\, and after it is created will depend on Copyright law. A creator’s copyrights are part of a bundle from which an artist can\, among other things\, license\, sell\, transfer\, and/or assign\, any number of rights to another. \nThis Copyright 101 workshop will provide an introduction to the basics of U.S. Copyright law. It will also focus on many types of licensing and the fair use defense. \nIf you create\, use\, appropriate\, produce\, commission… then this workshop is for you. \nPresenter\nElissa D. Hecker practices in the fields of copyright\, trademark and business law. Her clients encompass a large spectrum of the entertainment and corporate worlds. \nElissa is a repeat Super Lawyer\, Top 25 Westchester Lawyers\, recipient of the IP Excellence Award for Best Trademark Attorney of 2018 (New York)\, and recipient of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A.’s (CSUSA) inaugural Excellent Service Award. \nIn addition to her private practice\, Elissa is also a Past Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) Entertainment\, Arts and Sports Law (EASL) Section\, Co-Chair and creator of EASL’s Pro Bono Committee\, Editor of the EASL Journal and Blog\, Co-Editor of the books Entertainment Litigation\, Counseling Content Providers in the Digital Age\, and In the Arena\, Chair of the Board of Directors for Dance/NYC\, a member and former Trustee of CSUSA\, and Assistant Editor and a member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of the CSUSA. \nTechnology Requirement\nYou may attend this webinar using either a Mac or PC computer (with speakers)\, standard phone\, smartphone\, or tablet device. \nPlease use the AnyMeeting App or Chrome for the best webinar experience. \nMake sure your Adobe Flash Player plugin is up-to-date. If it is not\, you will be prompted to update it\, which will take about a minute. A strong wifi or hard-wired Internet connection is preferred. \nFor additional technical questions or issues\, please email at learning@nyfa.org. \nRecording\nThis workshop will be recorded. The recording will be shared with all previously registered participants after the session concludes\, regardless of whether participants attend the live webinar or not.
