SUMMARY:Musical Movies @ MoMA
DESCRIPTION:  \nLog Jam KJFG No. 5. 2007. Hungary. Directed by Alexei Alexeev. 2 min. \nThree “professional” musicians—a bear\, a rabbit\, and a wolf—are practicing their art in the forest\, but suddenly a hunter turns up on the scene . . . \nKuumba. 1978. USA. Directed by Bob Bloomberg and Jane Aaron. 8 min. \nUsing cutouts created by children\, which were animated by adults\, this is an origins tale from the island of Trinidad. Set on the evening of Carnival\, which is known elsewhere as Mardi Gras\, the film tells a delightful story of problem-solving and discovery. \nMusical Max. 1993. USA. Directed by Virginia Wilkos. 9 min. \nBased on the book by Robert Kraus\, this film features a young hippopotamus who happens to be very musically inclined. Max can play any instrument and loves to practice. He likes to practice so much that his blowing\, plinking\, and banging annoys his father (and the neighbors too!). See what happens when Max decides to give up practicing. \nThe Day I Beat the Sky. 2016. France. Directed by Hughes Valin. 3 min. \nWhile he is fascinated by every resonating thing\, a boy must face his greatest fear: a storm. He’s then going to use his gift for rhythms and sounds to beat his phobia. \nBegone Dull Care. 1949. Canada. Directed by Evelyn Lambart and Norman McLaren. 8 min. \nThis masterpiece of hand drawn animation features colors\, shapes\, and patterns painted directly onto clear 35mm film stock and set to the jazz music of the Oscar Peterson Trio. \nEnjoy new and classic family-friendly short films\, engaging discussions\, and suggestions for follow-up activities in the Museum’s galleries. This program is for individual families of up to two adults and up to three kids. \n\nView more Family Programs. \nTickets: Free tickets are distributed on a first-come\, first-served basis starting at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the program at the information desk in the Education and Research Building\, at 4 West 54 Street. \nContact: (212) 708-9805 or familyprograms@moma.org \nAccessibility: Sound amplification devices are available for all programs. SUMMARY:How To Read Nancy : The Elements of Comics in Three Easy Panels by Paul Karasik and Mark Newgarden @ SOI
DESCRIPTION:  \n*This event is not hosted by ASIFA East* \n\n\n\n\n\nPaul Karasik and Mark Newgarden will introduce their new work\, a unique meditation on the elements of comics as seen through the molecular deconstruction of the August 8\, 1959 daily episode of Ernie Bushmiller’s Nancy. Columbia University comics librarian Karen Green\, will chat with Mark and Paul about the genesis of this decade-long project and the author’s quest to isolate the blood\, sweat and tears that go into the making of a single comic strip. \nHow To Read Nancy is part encyclopedia\, part history\, part biography\, part treatise\, part humor theory\, and part how-to-be-a-cartoonist-in-43-easy-lessons-sorry-folks-no-refunds! \nA book singing and reception will follow the presentation. \nTickets\n$15 Non-Members | $10 Members | $7 Seniors/students (Undergrad with valid I.D.) \n“As one of the members of the first graduating class of How to Read Nancy\, I can insure that anyone who wants to understand the mechanics of comics should snap up this thorough (and thoroughly entertaining) extended autopsy of Bushmiller’s genius. I learned more about reading pictures from it than I did from seven years of art school.” – Chris Ware \n“A stirring examination of the perfect comic strip and a touching love letter to its creator.” -Dan Clowes  \n“Anyone who can come away from this book not understanding the complex thought that inhabits handcrafted objects\, minimal abstraction\, formalism\, the hidden value of orchestration or Nancy should just give up on art as inscrutable and imponderable.” -Gary Panter \n“How to Read Nancy details the agony involved in making comic strips. It is also a very funny book.” -Ben Katchor \n“Professors Karasik and Newgarden want to take you to school. They throw down an inky gauntlet\, and then back it up with almost absurd levels of elucidation. Filled with valuable lessons\, this book is a tribute to the art of the simple\, as exemplified by a master cartoonist.” -David Mazzucchelli \n“A crazy idea for a book.” -R. Crumb \nPaul Karasik\nPaul Karasik is the co-author (with David Mazzucchelli) of the graphic novel City of Glass\, adapted from the book by Paul Auster and chosen by The Comics Journal as one of the “100 Best Comics of the 20th Century”. His cartoons appear in the New Yorker. Paul teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. \nMark Newgarden\nMark Newgarden is a cartoonist and author of the book We All Die Alone\, the co-creator of “Garbage Pail Kids”\, and the co-author (with Megan Montague Cash) of the award-winning Bow-Wow series of children’s books. Mark teaches at Pratt Institute\, Parsons School of Design at The New School\, and The School of Visual Arts. \nErnie Bushmiller\nErnie Bushmiller\, the creator of Nancy\, began working as a copy boy at The New York World at the age of 14. His career spanned the better part of the  20th century\, paralleling the rise and fall of the American newspaper comic strip. At its height\, Nancy was published daily in more than 900 newspapers worldwide. Bushmiller died in 1982. \nKaren Green\nKaren Green is Columbia University’s first Curator for Comics and Cartoons. She has served as a judge for the Eisner Awards\, been a Pulitzer Prize juror\, and is a member of the Society of Illustrators’ board of directors\, while also speaking at universities and comics events across the country and around the world.  She teaches a summer course at Columbia on “Comics as Literature\,” which features the original “How to Read Nancy” essay.

DESCRIPTION:“An entertaining\, educational\, and poignant tale about identity and imagination that is filled with stories and poetry.” – Alissa Simon\, Variety \n \n“This is not just a visual treat\, it’s a rewarding and unexpectedly engrossing piece of female-led storytelling.” – Wendy Ide\, Screen International \n \n \n\n“We are pleased to announce the animated feature WINDOW HORSES  is being released in NY on November 10.   \n \n\nThe film is about Chinese/Iranian girl\, Rose Ming (voice by Sandra Oh) who is disconnected from her Iranian side of her family but becomes reconnected when travels there to perform at a poetry festival in Shiraz\, Iran.\n \nWINDOW HORSES is voiced by Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy\, SIDEWAYS)\, Oscar nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo (HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG\, 24) and Oscar and Golden Globe nominated actress Ellen Page (JUNO\, INCEPTION) and is directed by award-winning filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming (THE FRENCH GUY) and\n\n\n \nWINDOW HORSES has received much praise for it’s powerful message of love—love of family\, poetry\, history and culture.\n\n\n \nRosie Ming\, a young Canadian poet\, is invited to perform at a poetry festival in Shiraz\, Iran\, but she’d rather go to Paris. She lives at home with her over-protective Chinese grandparents and has never been anywhere by herself. Once in Iran\, she finds herself in the company of poets and Persians who tell her stories that force her to confront her past: the Iranian father she assumed abandoned her and the nature of poetry itself. DESCRIPTION:“Dirs. Michael Fiore\, Erik Sharkey. 2016\, 94 mins. DCP. Hired by Walt Disney in 1956\, Floyd Norman was the first African-American animator to work for the studio.
