SUMMARY:"This is What We Mean By Short Films" Rooftop Films Screening
DESCRIPTION:“Rooftop turns 21 this year. We’re legal\, but not playing it safe. On opening night\, we’re celebrating with our favorite stories from the moral grey zone: a mushroom of colorful balloons kills two before escaping to Canada\, an unnatural presence enters a tickle fight\, a subversive dance number takes down the patriarchy\, and a Russian circus meltdown is played in reverse. Like they say in our story of a robbery gone not-quite-wrong\, but more just ok\, “‘precitate ya!” See you at the after party!” \n \n\n\nEVENT DETAILS \n\n8:00 PM\nDoors Open\n\n\n8:30 PM\nLive Music\n\n\n9:00 PM\nFilms Begin\n\n\n10:30 PM\nAfter party sponsored by Corona\, Tanqueray and Fever Tree\n\nNo Refunds. No outside alcohol permitted.\n\n\nVENUE \nTHE OLD AMERICAN CAN FACTORY\n232 Third St.\, Brooklyn\, NY 11215 \n\n  \n\nBALLOONFEST\nNathan Truesdell | USA | 6 \nCleveland attempts to overcome its nickname\, ‘The Mistake by the Lake’ by launching a bunch of balloons.\n\n\nBLIND SEX\nSarah Santamaria-Mertens | France | 31 \nAt the end of the summer holidays Louise a 20 years old blind girl is stuck with her mother and sister. Lost in a forest she reaches a nudist campsite where an unexpected encounter will shake up her habits.\n\n\nBOSS BITCH\nWinona Regan | U.S.A. | 2 \nA mom\, a judge\, and a firefighter each battle sexism in this animated music video created by Winona Regan. Each woman is a boss bitch in her own way\, twerking and shooting lasers as they take on the patriarchy to a rap by PTAF.\n\n\nFLOWERS\nNikyatu Jusu\, Yvonne (Michelle) Shirley | USA | 19 \nBrooklyn teens Mya and Erin are thrust into a revenge scheme that threatens an irrevocable domino effect. The two girls navigate a Brooklyn summer they will never forget.\n\n\nHI STRANGER\nKirsten Lepore | USA | 3 \nI made this film especially for you. I needed to check in with you. I needed to tell you how I feel.\n\n\nLENINGRAD-KOLISHIK\nIlya Naishuller | Russia | 4 \nA circus of destruction\, played in reverse.\n\n\nTHE ROBBERY\nJim Cummings\, Dustin Hahn | USA | 10 \nCrystal robs a liquor store – it goes pretty ok.\n\n\nTHE TALE OF HILLBELLY\nDaren Rabinovitch\, Isaiah Saxon\, Sean Hellfritsch | USA | 9 \nIn high alpine pastures\, a rural young man performs advanced yoga. He meets a fragile fox andcommunes with it. He journeys to high peaks and through deep meditation\, attempts to reach further enlightenment. However\, his own physical hunger prevents this and drives him deeperinto nature than he could have ever wished for.\n\n\nTICKLE MONSTER\nRemi Weekes | UK | 5 \nWhen Natalie learns that Elliott is ticklish\, things get bad. And then they get worse.\n\n\n\nMUSIC \nINNOV GNAWA\nInnov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus\, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer\, a Maâlem\, or master gnawa musician\, originally from Fes\, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer\, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music\, and made a big splash in NYC\, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center\, Music Hall of Williamsburg\, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès. For the uninitiated\, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities\, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”\, gnawa music has a raw\, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles\, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular\, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune\, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering\, hypnotic rhythms. Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the “”5 Bands You Need to Know in Brooklyn’s Arabic Music Scene””\, Innov Gnawa make great use of this traditional repertoire\, and add their own\, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. Taken as a whole\, this exciting new outfit works hard to fuse a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of New York City.

DESCRIPTION:5 Second Animation Night — a Titmouse tradition\, a day when Titmouse animators create whatever animated goodies have been floating around in their minds all year. \nTitmouse began in Los Angeles as a T-shirt company in the year 2000\, created by School of Visual Arts alumni Chris & Shannon Prynoski. SUMMARY:Cartoon Carnival 53: Fairytales & Fables
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit back and relax for another hefty batch of 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1910s to the 1940s\, straight from the Stathes Archives to the silver screen at Shoestring Press… \n \nThroughout animation history\, it was immensely popular to adapt (and spoof!) classic fairytales and fables from antiquity…sometimes giving them a ‘modern’ spin. This was especially true in the era of theatrical shorts\, and we’re showcasing these whimsical animated versions of yesteryear to combat a dreary bit of February cabin fever. Mother Goose? Little Red Riding Hood? Cinderella? Snow White? Aladdin? Jack & the Beanstalk? We’ll have ’em\, and many others\, at TSCC #53. Bring a friend…bring the kids…bring anyone!! \nShow tix $10 at the door.\nLight refreshments will be available for purchase from Shoestring Press. \nDoors at 8pm; show starts promptly thereafter. Arrive on time for good seats!\n***********************\nTommy Stathes is a “Cartoon Cryptozoologist” with a rare film print collection comprised of over 1\,500 shorts. Tommy’s long term goal has been to acquire and preserve as many early animated films as possible and reintroduce them to the public.
