SUMMARY:New York Baltic Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the first Baltic Film Festival – October 18-21\, 2018\, New York City\n  \nFilm Line Up Just Announced \nThe festival will include 18 films and feature 7 U.S. premiere screenings and 9 NYC premieres and will include notable classic films that have rarely been seen outside of Europe as well as the latest features\, documentaries\, and animation films from some of the best established and upcoming filmmakers from Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania. Click here to see the full film line up and to purchase your tickets. \nThe Other Cinema of Northern Europe \nThe three Baltic states of Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have been producing motion pictures since 1910. While not as well-known as those in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe\, their industries have met challenges in one era or another that ultimately only galvanized their creative ambitions for features\, documentaries\, and animation shorts. Through the screening of both the latest productions and selected classics\, the inaugural 2018 New York Baltic Film Festival offers an unprecedented opportunity to see the best in northern European filmmaking. \nThe 2018 New York Baltic Film Festival is presented Scandinavia House and organized by the Consulate General of Estonia\, Consulate General of Lithuania and Consulate of Latvia in New York. Programming support is from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, and Lithuanian Film Center. Funding for the festival is courtesy of governments of the Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania and by the generous donations of members of the Baltic community in New York. Additional support to the festival is from the Lithuanian Cultural Institute\, the Consulate General of Finland in New York\, and the American Scandinavian Foundation.

SUMMARY:Cartoon Carnival 68: Queer Here
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit back and relax for nearly two hours of more archival 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s to the 1940s\, straight from the Stathes Archives to that secret silver screen in Bushwick… \nJune is Pride Month! For the first time in its nine year run\, the Tommy Stathes Cartoon Carnival showcases an under-acknowledged population in animation’s past. \nThroughout history\, derogatory stereotyping of minority groups has been recurring theme in popular culture and the mainstream media. Animated films were certainly no exception\, and a large portion of animation history is plagued with denigrating material. In addition to the overt racism and sexism present in a lot of early animation\, characters meant to represent members of the queer/transgender community were occasionally included in cameo appearances—serving as tropes\, stereotypes\, and tokens\, without contributing much to a film’s plot. In a couple of other cases\, these characters were headliners—a certain famous bunny comes to mind—although this aspect of their identities\, while blatant and sometimes narrative-driving\, went mostly unaddressed in open dialogues until recent years.  \nThis special Pride edition of the Cartoon Carnival is respectfully curated by and for LGBTQIA+ individuals as well as their allies. Locking our difficult history away in vaults or completely erasing it helps no one. Some of these problematic images and attitudes are sadly not relegated only to the past\, either. So\, come on out with your loved ones as we focus on this obscure area of animation history\, while hopefully reclaiming it in a positive light for a community that needs all the support it can get…every month of the year. \nBar refreshments and light food available (i.e. hot dogs\, hamburgers\, etc.) —Support the venue!— \nShow tix $10 at the door. Doors at 6pm.\n~Arrive on time for good seats~

DESCRIPTION:#NewYork #Brooklyn #ParkSlope: Picture This! is BACK for another night of live animated ONE NIGHT ONLY combinations of #NY’s best comedians and artists! ???????????? \nCOMEDY BY: Murray Hill\, Joe Pera\, Liza Treyger\, Dave Mizzoni\, Alex English & Jaye McBride!\nANIMATION BY: Bryan Brinkman\, Dan Pinto\, Casey Safron\, Tristian Goik\, Victoria Montes & more!\nHOSTED BY: Ian Fidance! \nSATURDAY 6/16 Doors 6:30pm\, Show 7pm\n$8 online at https://www.ticketfly.com/purchase/event/1694029 or $10 at the ????\nat Union Hall\, 702 Union St\, Brooklyn\, NY 11215\nEvent Detail: https://www.unionhallny.com/event/1694029\n______________________________________________\n“What is Picture This!?” \nPICTURE THIS! is a new show from Brandie Posey & Sam Varela: two girls who want to push the boundaries of what a comedy show can be. Picture This! is a live comedy show with stand-ups performing while they are drawn live by some of the best animators\, cartoonists\, and other artists in Hollywood\, CA\, SF\, NYC and Portland. Picture This! has also debuted in Toronto\, New Zealand and Australia! The comedians don’t know what the animators are drawing and the animators don’t know how the comedians will react. \nIt may be weird. \nIt may different. \nBut it will be FUNNY! \n“This is a super cool show\, I’m proud to be a part of it!“ – Jay Larson \n”Brandie Posey & Sam Varela have something very cool going on here…the results are organic\, highly entertaining and often times hilarious.” – The Interrobang  \n“It’s a deceptively simple idea…a good exercise for the performers to keep their improv instincts sharp and it’s good entertainment watching funny people goof off.” – Portland Mercury \n“If you like animated comedies\, how about animated stand-up comedy?… It’s just like having your portrait drawn at a fair\, only instead of mildly insulting caricatures\, you get to see one-of-a-kind depictions of what’s going on inside funny people’s heads.” – Vulture \n“The amicable marriage of sight\, sound and more sight…each [artist and comedian] performing their due diligence to visualize this crazy thing called funny.” – Spinning Platters \n“The dynamic between comedian and illustrator can be push and pull\, but when it works\, they’re ultimately moving in the same direction.” – The Comic’s Comic \n“Often\, the drawings are just as funny as the standup\, enhancing and occasionally stealing the show.. A comedian might have a prepared set that gets thrown totally into a tangent when the illustrator adds their own input or sketches a crude figure that takes the joke to the next level. There’s also a high potential for verbal vs. visual banter.” – LAist \n“An inherent irony existed in the disparity between two disciplines identified by the term “comic” – Spinning Platters \n“Our animators are joke-tellers\, too\, they just process the same bits visually versus verbally\, it’s always so cool to see your bit from a different angle you hadn’t thought to explore! I always feel like I’m dealing with the most talented heckler in the room on the show – once you surrender yourself to the idea that you’ll never be as dynamic.” – Brandie Posey \n“The show is growing fast. Comedians perform while comedy’s best illustrators create masterpieces based on what they’re hearing on stage\, live. You get to watch the process and it’s a really fun time.” – The Interrobang\, Top Five Shows Out of Towners Need to See \n“Stand-up comedy typically hinges on performers maintaining total power and control. Yet these shows put a premium on experimentation and vulnerability\, humanizing the comics in the process.” – LA Weekly

SUMMARY:Secret Cinema: NYC's Cartoon Roots with Tommy José Stathes
DESCRIPTION:The Secret Cinema presents NEW YORK CITY’S CARTOON ROOTS \nOn Saturday\, June 9\, the Secret Cinema’s screening at the Fleisher Art Memorial will include a very special guest: early animation historian and film archivist Tommy José Stathes\, who will provide a look into New York’s budding animation industry of the 1910s and 1920s.  \nThe program is called NEW YORK CITY’S CARTOON ROOTS. With a selection of rare archival 16mm prints from Stathes’ personal archive\, a fairly comprehensive cross-section of this silent-era subgenre will showcase the work of pioneers such as Winsor McCay\, Raoul Barré\, Earl Hurd\, Otto Messmer\, Max Fleischer and Paul Terry. Fledgling cartoon superstars like Bobby Bumps\, Koko the Clown\, Felix the Cat\, Farmer Alfalfa\, Krazy Kay\, and Mutt & Jeff will all be included. \nStathes will give an informative introduction about this fascinating\, yet little-studied period of animation\, and answer questions about the films. \nThere will be one complete show at 8:00 pm. Admission is $9.00.  \nAs usual\, this Secret Cinema program will be projected in 16mm film on a giant screen (not video). \nThe screening will be shown in the beautiful Sanctuary of the Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia’s Bella Vista neighborhood (just South of Center City). Free parking is available in the Fleisher’s parking lot\, just across the street. \nJust a few of the films to be included are: \nCARTOONS ON TOUR (Barré\, 1915)\nBOBBY BUMPS PUTS A BEANERY ON THE BUM (Hurd\, 1918)\nTHE FLYING HOUSE (McCay\, 1921)\nTHE TANTALIZING FLY (Fleischer\, 1919)\nTHE GREAT CHEESE ROBBERY (Bray Studios\, 1920)\nFELIX REVOLTS (Messmer\, 1923)\nBARNYARD ARTISTS (Terry\, 1928) \n…and much more. \nTommy José Stathes is an archivist\, historian\, distributor\, and educator in the realm of early animated films. Stathes is best known in film history circles for creating the Bray Animation Project research initiative; the Cartoons On Film early animation re-release label and Cartoon Roots Blu-rays; supplying early animated films to and co-hosting them on Turner Classic Movies; as well as for his 16mm “Cartoon Carnival” film screening series in New York City. Stathes is also a faculty member at the School of Visual Arts and the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema\, and is Consulting Producer on CARTOON CARNIVAL: THE DOCUMENTARY\, which is soon to be released. \nSECRET CINEMA WEBSITE: http://www.thesecretcinema.com  \nFLEISHER ART MEMORIAL WEBSITE: http://fleisher.org

SUMMARY:An Evening with Candy Kugel @ MOMA
DESCRIPTION:MOMA LINK \nIn Candy Kugel’s new film I\, Candy (2018)\, the process of deconstructing a childhood drawing triggers the artist’s reflections on a personal history with anti-Semitism\, political activism\, and life choices affected by luck and determination. Displaying an encyclopedic range of animation techniques with remarkable dexterity\, I\, Candy is a testament to Kugel’s pioneering 45-year career in the field. Animation artist and historian John Canemaker joins Kugel to discuss her legacy as a woman artist in the traditionally male business of animation.

SUMMARY:Jackie Greene's Music Video Extravaganza!
DESCRIPTION:EVENTBRITE INVITE \nJoin musician Jackie Greene and animator Bill Plympton for the world premiere of their new animated short film\, “The Modern Lives”\, followed by a live performance by Greene and a Q&A with both artists. \nThis screening is free and open to the public. General Admission RSVPs via Eventbrite are appreciated\, but not necessary\, and do not guarantee admittance. Seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis. Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to the screening. \nhttp://themodernlives.eventbrite.com/ \nhttp://svatheatre.com/events/jackie-greene-bill-plymptons-music-video-extravaganza/ \nIt’s a perfect match of fiercely independent artists: Jackie Greene\, the rocking singer/songwriter hailed by the NY Times as the “Prince of Americana” and Bill Plympton\, the Oscar-nominated “king of indie animation.” \nGreene has always had a knack for capturing the human experience in all its messy\, emotional complexity in song\, and Plympton is well known for coupling his hand-drawn animation and twisted sense of humor with explorations of adult themes\, relationships and sexuality. Together they’ve created “The Modern Lives\,” an animated short film that takes you on the road from a tripped-out alien invaded Times Square to the deep roots of the American South. Along the way there are encounters with Elvis\, Satan\, Willie Dixon\, an Alabama Queen … and so much more! \nThe program will also feature Bill’s animated videos for Madonna\, Kanye West and “Weird Al” Yankovic – and Jackie performing a couple of songs from the film and the EP that inspired it\, “The Modern Lives – Vol 1”. A Q&A session with Bill and Jackie will cap off the night!
