SUMMARY:My Entire High School is Sinking Into the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper\, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship\, Dash learns of a cover-up by the administration that puts all the students in danger. As disaster erupts and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school\, they are joined by a popular know-it-all (Lena Dunham) and a lunch lady (Susan Sarandon) who is much more than meets the eye. But even as the film piles on brilliant details like a post-apocalyptic cult formed by jocks\, video game homages\, and an infectious synth soundtrack\, it never loses sight of the characters at the heart of the story. \n \n\n2016 / 77min / DCP\nDIRECTOR: DASH SHAW \nCAST: JASON SCHWARTZMAN\, LENA DUNHAM\, REGGIE WATTS\, MAYA RUDOLPH\, SUSAN SARANDON \n\nJohn Cameron Mitchell moderates a Q&A with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm show on Saturday\, April 15.\nQ&As with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm shows on Friday & Sunday\, April 14 & 16. \nA Gkids release”

SUMMARY:Ghost In the Shell (Anime!)
DESCRIPTION: \n\n“My codename is Project 2501\, and I am a life form that was born in a sea of information.” In the year 2029\, the world looks like a hybridization of Hong Kong\, Tokyo\, and New York\, yielding to entropy and technocracy. Cyborg Major Kusanagi\, a perfect specimen of human-brained computer engineering is on the case to track and destroy an omnipotent entity known as The Puppet Master—a hacker? a virus?— who threatens world order. Her journey is equally physical and existential\, and shaped seamlessly by Mamoru Oshii’s animation\, combining traditional hand-drawn cells and computer generated graphics. As resonant now as ever\, the haunting\, awe-inspring original Ghost in the Shell is Oshii’s magnum opus; the groundbreaking anime gets a revival run at Metrograph one week before the release of the new live action film. \n \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \n\n1995 / 83min / DCP\nDIRECTOR: MAMORU OSHII \nCAST: ATSUKO TANAKA\, AKIO ÔTSUKA\, KÔICHI YAMADERA\, YUTAKA NAKANO \nGhost In The Shell is screening as part of the series: The Singularity

SUMMARY:Cartoon Carnival 53: Fairytales & Fables
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit back and relax for another hefty batch of 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1910s to the 1940s\, straight from the Stathes Archives to the silver screen at Shoestring Press… \n \nThroughout animation history\, it was immensely popular to adapt (and spoof!) classic fairytales and fables from antiquity…sometimes giving them a ‘modern’ spin. This was especially true in the era of theatrical shorts\, and we’re showcasing these whimsical animated versions of yesteryear to combat a dreary bit of February cabin fever. Mother Goose? Little Red Riding Hood? Cinderella? Snow White? Aladdin? Jack & the Beanstalk? We’ll have ’em\, and many others\, at TSCC #53. Bring a friend…bring the kids…bring anyone!! \nShow tix $10 at the door.\nLight refreshments will be available for purchase from Shoestring Press. \nDoors at 8pm; show starts promptly thereafter. Arrive on time for good seats!\n***********************\nTommy Stathes is a “Cartoon Cryptozoologist” with a rare film print collection comprised of over 1\,500 shorts. Tommy’s long term goal has been to acquire and preserve as many early animated films as possible and reintroduce them to the public.
