SUMMARY:Loving Vincent @ Sunshine Cinema
DESCRIPTION:*This event is not hosted by ASIFA East* \n  \nLoving Vincent\, the world’s first fully oil painted feature film\, brings the artwork of Vincent van Gogh to vibrant life in an exploration of the complicated life and controversial death of one of history’s most celebrated artists. More than six years in the making with the help of 125 specially trained painters\, Loving Vincent is a uniquely animated film composed of 65\,000 painted frames. Drawn from meticulous research and inspired by van Gogh’s masterpieces\, subjects\, and 800 personal letters\, the film captures the world of van Gogh in a cinematic experience like no other. The story begins a year after van Gogh’s death\, when Armand Roulin (voice of Douglas Booth)\, the postmaster’s son\, is tasked with delivering Vincent’s last letter\, and ends up interviewing all those who knew him in his troubled last days\, trying to understand Vincent’s character and what happened. With the voice talent of Saoirse Ronan\, Chris O’Dowd\, Aidan Turner\, Eleanor Tomlinson\, Jerome Flynn and Robert Gulaczyk. \nLandmark Presents an Exclusive Filmmaker Letter from co-writer/co-director Hugh Welchman

SUMMARY:Floyd Norman: An Animated Life
DESCRIPTION:“Dirs. Michael Fiore\, Erik Sharkey. 2016\, 94 mins. DCP. Hired by Walt Disney in 1956\, Floyd Norman was the first African-American animator to work for the studio. He has been called the “Forrest Gump” of animation\, because he worked on such timeless classics as The Sleeping Beauty\, 101 Dalmatians\, and The Jungle Book\, as well as the Hanna Barbera cartoons of the 1970s and ‘80s\, and Pixar classics like Toy Story 2 and Monsters\, Inc. He has continued to work on his own\, and at age 82\, he plans to “die at the drawing board.” The Hollywood Reporter called this enchanting documentary portrait “an entertaining salute to an unsung figure whose considerable accomplishments well deserve recognition.” In this rare New York appearance\, Floyd Norman will talk about his remarkable career in animation. And then they get worse.\n\n\n\nMUSIC \nINNOV GNAWA\nInnov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus\, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer\, a Maâlem\, or master gnawa musician\, originally from Fes\, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer\, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music\, and made a big splash in NYC\, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center\, Music Hall of Williamsburg\, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès. For the uninitiated\, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities\, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”\, gnawa music has a raw\, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles\, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular\, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune\, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering\, hypnotic rhythms. Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the “”5 Bands You Need to Know in Brooklyn’s Arabic Music Scene””\, Innov Gnawa make great use of this traditional repertoire\, and add their own\, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. Taken as a whole\, this exciting new outfit works hard to fuse a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of New York City.

SUMMARY:My Entire High School is Sinking Into the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper\, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship\, Dash learns of a cover-up by the administration that puts all the students in danger. As disaster erupts and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school\, they are joined by a popular know-it-all (Lena Dunham) and a lunch lady (Susan Sarandon) who is much more than meets the eye. But even as the film piles on brilliant details like a post-apocalyptic cult formed by jocks\, video game homages\, and an infectious synth soundtrack\, it never loses sight of the characters at the heart of the story. \n \n\n2016 / 77min / DCP\nDIRECTOR: DASH SHAW \nCAST: JASON SCHWARTZMAN\, LENA DUNHAM\, REGGIE WATTS\, MAYA RUDOLPH\, SUSAN SARANDON \n\nJohn Cameron Mitchell moderates a Q&A with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm show on Saturday\, April 15.\nQ&As with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm shows on Friday & Sunday\, April 14 & 16. \nA Gkids release”

SUMMARY:Ghost In the Shell (Anime!)
DESCRIPTION: \n\n“My codename is Project 2501\, and I am a life form that was born in a sea of information.” In the year 2029\, the world looks like a hybridization of Hong Kong\, Tokyo\, and New York\, yielding to entropy and technocracy. Cyborg Major Kusanagi\, a perfect specimen of human-brained computer engineering is on the case to track and destroy an omnipotent entity known as The Puppet Master—a hacker? a virus?— who threatens world order. Her journey is equally physical and existential\, and shaped seamlessly by Mamoru Oshii’s animation\, combining traditional hand-drawn cells and computer generated graphics. As resonant now as ever\, the haunting\, awe-inspring original Ghost in the Shell is Oshii’s magnum opus; the groundbreaking anime gets a revival run at Metrograph one week before the release of the new live action film. \n \nIn Japanese with English subtitles \n\n1995 / 83min / DCP\nDIRECTOR: MAMORU OSHII \nCAST: ATSUKO TANAKA\, AKIO ÔTSUKA\, KÔICHI YAMADERA\, YUTAKA NAKANO \nGhost In The Shell is screening as part of the series: The Singularity
