SUMMARY:Cartoon Carnival 65: Bunnies vs. Ducks
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit back and relax for another hefty batch of 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s to the 1940s\, straight from the Stathes Archives to the silver screen at Shoestring Press… \nProgram #65 takes place just in time for Peter Cottontail’s big day! It’s a fluffy feather-filled battle between some of the cutesy animal characters now associated with Easter—in this case\, bunnies and ducks—for your attention and affection. Whether it’s Bugs Bunny\, Daffy Duck\, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit\, or any number of other one-shot and obscure characters…who will win? Hop on down and bring your fellow wascally wabbits out for a holy resurrection of ancient cartoon hoots and hollers.  \nFeaturing live ragtime bunny hopping by Charlie Judkins for select silent-era shorts! \nShow tix $10 at the door. \nLight beverage refreshments available. BYO food\, too! \nDoors at 8pm; show starts promptly thereafter. ~Arrive on time for good seats~

SUMMARY:Jackie Greene's Music Video Extravaganza!
DESCRIPTION:EVENTBRITE INVITE \nJoin musician Jackie Greene and animator Bill Plympton for the world premiere of their new animated short film\, “The Modern Lives”\, followed by a live performance by Greene and a Q&A with both artists. \nThis screening is free and open to the public. General Admission RSVPs via Eventbrite are appreciated\, but not necessary\, and do not guarantee admittance. Seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis. Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to the screening. \nhttp://themodernlives.eventbrite.com/ \nhttp://svatheatre.com/events/jackie-greene-bill-plymptons-music-video-extravaganza/ \nIt’s a perfect match of fiercely independent artists: Jackie Greene\, the rocking singer/songwriter hailed by the NY Times as the “Prince of Americana” and Bill Plympton\, the Oscar-nominated “king of indie animation.” \nGreene has always had a knack for capturing the human experience in all its messy\, emotional complexity in song\, and Plympton is well known for coupling his hand-drawn animation and twisted sense of humor with explorations of adult themes\, relationships and sexuality. Together they’ve created “The Modern Lives\,” an animated short film that takes you on the road from a tripped-out alien invaded Times Square to the deep roots of the American South. Along the way there are encounters with Elvis\, Satan\, Willie Dixon\, an Alabama Queen … and so much more! \nThe program will also feature Bill’s animated videos for Madonna\, Kanye West and “Weird Al” Yankovic – and Jackie performing a couple of songs from the film and the EP that inspired it\, “The Modern Lives – Vol 1”. A Q&A session with Bill and Jackie will cap off the night!

SUMMARY:Make Pictures Hosted by GIPHY Arts and bitforms gallery nyc
DESCRIPTION:Facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/225305618027375/ \nMake Pictures: Wednesday March 21 – Sunday March 25\nGallery Hours: Wednesday – Saturday\, 11 AM – 6 PM & Sunday 12 – 6 PM\nbitforms gallery\, 131 Allen St.\, New York\, NY 10002 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday March 21\, 6 – 8 PM\nCasey Reas and Jeffrey Alan Scudder in Conversation: Saturday March 24\, 2:30 PM \nbitforms gallery is pleased to present Make Pictures\, featuring four web-based drawing and animation tools commissioned by GIPHY Arts and curated by artist Jeffrey Alan Scudder. Works on view and available to use include Sketch Machine by Casey Reas\, Extinctr by Harm van den Dorpel\, Eyemall by Withering Systems\, and Boopy by Andrew Benson. Pictures created by gallery visitors using the tools will be displayed in the gallery for the duration of the show. \nSketch Machine by Casey Reas is an open source software for creating freehand animations in real time or frame by frame. The user can draw with different colored points\, lines\, and planes and modify qualities of the animation such as jitter\, speed\, and playback. Animations can be exported as GIFs and circulated online. Sketch Machine is created within the tradition of direct animation works by Len Lye and Stan Brakhage and exploratory drawing software like Kid Pix and TURUX.  \nExtinctr is a pixel sorting algorithm and web tool by Harm van den Dorpel that accepts any image as input\, and outputs an animated vertical decomposition of that image into a pixelated mound. The user can control the speed of the dismantling procedure (scatter) and record any duration of the process to export as a GIF. \nThe Eyemall is a toy by Withering Systems for creating an exquisite corpse from a curated\, tagged selection of human body-part GIFs in GIPHY’s database. Hands\, eyes\, noses\, sweaters\, shorts\, knees\, lips\, and other body parts come together to form an interactive marionette-like figure; a single body made from disparate GIF parts.  \nBoopy is a drawing tool by Andrew Benson developed in response to the question “What would it be like if\, as you are drawing\, the canvas was looping?” Boopy allows the user to build complex\, layered\, repeating patterns from different textured brushes. It also includes a webcam feature that allows a user to reveal their image by erasing a layer with animated strokes. \n— \nCasey REAS writes software to explore emergent systems. His work brings together conceptualism\, systems theory\, experimental film and animation\, and drawing. While software is at the core of his practice\, his work spans installation\, works on paper\, and live performance. Reas has been featured in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, SF; Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago\, IL; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\, CA; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France; Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, England; MIT Museum\, Cambridge\, MA; Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, MA; Eyebeam\, New York\, NY; Ars Electronica\, Linz\, Austria; Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe\, Karlsruhe\, Germany\, and others. Reas is the co-creator\, with Ben Fry\, of Processing\, an open source programming language and environment. The project was initiated in 2001. \nHarm van den Dorpel lives and works in Berlin. Selected (group) exhibitions include the New Museum in New York\, MoMa PS1 in New York\, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing\, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw\, Museum Kurhaus Kleve\, ZKM Karlsruhe\, and the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam. In 2015\, Van den Dorpel started Left Gallery\, an online gallery that commissions\, produces\, and sells downloadable files. \nWithering Systems is a small software label and umbrella for the collaborative projects of Katie Rose Pipkin and Loren Schmidt\, based in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. They aim to bring quiet and unusual digital experiences to the public in unlikely places\, such as on social media\, in printed material\, or on the street. Past work includes inflorescence.city\, the moth generator\, luminous corridor\, as well as many other small games\, print projects\, and plant-growth simulations. \nAndrew Benson lives in Los Angeles\, formerly San Francisco\, and works primarily in time-based (often realtime) digital media. His practice incorporates 3D animation\, experimental and process-driven video\, software development\, interactive technologies\, web programming. He comes from a painting and music background and started working with experimental graphics and video as an outgrowth of performing at noise shows.  \nJeffrey Alan Scudder\, born in 1989\, lives and works in Berkeley\, CA where he spends his time programming and making pictures. Since 2017 he has presented 18 Radical Digital Painting lectures often in collaboration with other artists\, at various venues including ZKM Karlsruhe\, RISD\, Harvard\, Yale\, Temple University\, Rutgers\, and UMASS. He has taught at UCLA and Parsons School for Design and worked at the design studio Linked by Air. Scudder received an MFA in sculpture from Yale University School of Art in 2013. \nGIPHY Arts is a subsidiary of GIPHY\, the GIF search engine. GIPHY Arts expands the prominence of the GIF as an artistic medium and format by directly engaging and commissioning artists\, creating new distribution possibilities\, and pioneering new technology. SUMMARY:Loving Vincent @ Sunshine Cinema
DESCRIPTION:*This event is not hosted by ASIFA East* \n  \nLoving Vincent\, the world’s first fully oil painted feature film\, brings the artwork of Vincent van Gogh to vibrant life in an exploration of the complicated life and controversial death of one of history’s most celebrated artists. More than six years in the making with the help of 125 specially trained painters\, Loving Vincent is a uniquely animated film composed of 65\,000 painted frames. Drawn from meticulous research and inspired by van Gogh’s masterpieces\, subjects\, and 800 personal letters\, the film captures the world of van Gogh in a cinematic experience like no other. The story begins a year after van Gogh’s death\, when Armand Roulin (voice of Douglas Booth)\, the postmaster’s son\, is tasked with delivering Vincent’s last letter\, and ends up interviewing all those who knew him in his troubled last days\, trying to understand Vincent’s character and what happened. With the voice talent of Saoirse Ronan\, Chris O’Dowd\, Aidan Turner\, Eleanor Tomlinson\, Jerome Flynn and Robert Gulaczyk. \nLandmark Presents an Exclusive Filmmaker Letter from co-writer/co-director Hugh Welchman

And then they get worse.\n\n\n\nMUSIC \nINNOV GNAWA\nInnov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus\, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer\, a Maâlem\, or master gnawa musician\, originally from Fes\, Morocco. Under the guidance of Ben Jaafer\, Innov has delved deep into the roots and rituals of gnawa music\, and made a big splash in NYC\, playing some of the city’s most prestigious rooms including Lincoln Center\, Music Hall of Williamsburg\, Brooklyn Bowl and the storied backroom of Brooklyn’s Barbès. For the uninitiated\, gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities\, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”\, gnawa music has a raw\, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles\, jazz giant Randy Weston and rock god Jimi Hendrix. The music is utterly singular\, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune\, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering\, hypnotic rhythms. Hailed by Brooklyn Magazine as one of the “”5 Bands You Need to Know in Brooklyn’s Arabic Music Scene””\, Innov Gnawa make great use of this traditional repertoire\, and add their own\, contemporary spin with additional African and Latin percussion. Taken as a whole\, this exciting new outfit works hard to fuse a centuries old North African tradition with the pulse and attitude of New York City.

SUMMARY:My Entire High School is Sinking Into the Sea
DESCRIPTION:“Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School muckraking on behalf of their widely-distributed but little-read school newspaper\, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship\, Dash learns of a cover-up by the administration that puts all the students in danger. As disaster erupts and the friends race to escape through the roof of the school\, they are joined by a popular know-it-all (Lena Dunham) and a lunch lady (Susan Sarandon) who is much more than meets the eye. But even as the film piles on brilliant details like a post-apocalyptic cult formed by jocks\, video game homages\, and an infectious synth soundtrack\, it never loses sight of the characters at the heart of the story. \n \n\n2016 / 77min / DCP\nDIRECTOR: DASH SHAW \nCAST: JASON SCHWARTZMAN\, LENA DUNHAM\, REGGIE WATTS\, MAYA RUDOLPH\, SUSAN SARANDON \n\nJohn Cameron Mitchell moderates a Q&A with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm show on Saturday\, April 15.\nQ&As with Dash Shaw\, Jane Samborski and Kyle Martin at the 7pm shows on Friday & Sunday\, April 14 & 16. \nA Gkids release”
