SUMMARY:AKIRA at IFC center
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 20 – Saturday\, September 21\, 2019 \nSHOWTIMES\n“The modern anime masterpiece that was instrumental in bringing Western audiences attention to the exciting world of anime\, Akira is still a marvel of imagination and art. Backed by a then-record budget of US$10 million\, Akira was the most expensive feature-length anime ever created. Its cutting-edge artwork rivaled anything yet produced by Disney or any other major Western creators of popular animation and its sophisticated story-line – replete with multidimensional characters and scenes of graphic violence – appealed to both adult and teenage audiences worldwide. \n“Envisioning a future where the streets of post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo are ruled by biker gangs and the upper echelons of society is ridden with intrigue\, the movie concerns the exploits of Shotaro Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata) and Tetsuo Shima (Nozomu Sasaki)\, two members of a teenage biker gang engaged in a brutal turf war with a rival group of thugs called the Clowns. While running for his life with two Clowns in close pursuit\, Tetsuo encounters the mysterious Takashi (Tatsuhiko Nakamura)\, a young boy recently rescued from a government research facility by a terrorist group known as the Resistance.\n \n“The movie consists of 2\,212 shots and 160\,000 single pictures\, almost three times more than usual\, using 327 different colours (another record in animated movies)\, fifty of which were exclusively created for the film. The reason for this statistic is that most of the movie takes place at night\, a setting that is traditionally avoided by animators because of the increased colour requirements. This was also one of the first Japanese anime films to have the character’s voices recorded before they were animated. While this is the typical practice in Western animation\, in Japan the animation is generally produced first. Furthermore\, the music for the film was completed before any of the composers saw a frame of film or read the script so\, of course\, the music had to be re-edited to fit certain scenes.” – Horror News (2013)  \nScreening as part of our Summer 2019 series\, “Waverly Midnights: Staff Picks.” \n\nCountry Japan\nYear 1988\nRunning Time 124 minutes\nDirector Katsuhiro Otomo\nWriter Katsuhiro Otomo (manga & screenplay)\, Izo Hashimoto (screenplay)\nEditor Takeshi Seyama\nCinematographer Katsuji Misawa

SUMMARY:Paprika! at IFC center
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 6 – Saturday\, September 7\, 2019 \nSHOWTIMES\n35mm Print!\n \n“In the 11 years since its release\, PAPRIKA\, from Perfect Blue director Satoshi Kon\, has garnered cult status as an ambitious sci-fi oddity. Not just that\, but it’s a mind-blowing swan song for the talented director who died in 2010. \n \n \n“The film takes place in a relatively near-future Japan where a revolutionary experimental device called the DC Mini allows users to interact with their dreams and the dreams of others. As a troubled detective receives illegal in-dream therapy from a mysterious figure known as Paprika\, the DC Mini’s untapped power threatens to envelope the entire world in a living lucid dream where reality and fantasy become indistinguishable.\n\n \n“Even though its Day-Glo surrealism continually inspires child-like wonder\, PAPRIKA isn’t for the faint of heart. Its total dedication to the anti-structure of dreams is disorientating to say the least. As an experience it really knows how to exploit dream logic\, leap-frogging boundaries with dizzying rapidity. There’s a really great darker edge which creeps in as the film’s multiple fantasies start cascading into each other. Abandoned alley ways illustrate the dark side of the subconscious whilst people’s self-image effects their dream-appearance in confusing and disturbing ways. Time and time again the animation itself offers fresh sumptuous imagery perhaps less easily achieved in live action.\n\n“As a dream thriller about corporate sabotage\, thievery\, mistaken-identity\, and idea construction it’s hard not to notice an influence on Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Whilst that film has its charms and thrills PAPRIKA blows it out the park in approach to the fertile grounds of dreams and film theory.” – Starburst Magazine (2017) \nScreening as a Staff Pick as part of our Summer 2019 series\, “Waverly Midnights: Late-Night Favorites.” \n\n\nCountry Japan\nYear 2006\nDirector Satoshi Kon

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the first Baltic Film Festival – October 18-21\, 2018\, New York City\n  \nFilm Line Up Just Announced \nThe festival will include 18 films and feature 7 U.S. premiere screenings and 9 NYC premieres and will include notable classic films that have rarely been seen outside of Europe as well as the latest features\, documentaries\, and animation films from some of the best established and upcoming filmmakers from Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania. Click here to see the full film line up and to purchase your tickets. \nThe Other Cinema of Northern Europe \nThe three Baltic states of Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania have been producing motion pictures since 1910. While not as well-known as those in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe\, their industries have met challenges in one era or another that ultimately only galvanized their creative ambitions for features\, documentaries\, and animation shorts. Through the screening of both the latest productions and selected classics\, the inaugural 2018 New York Baltic Film Festival offers an unprecedented opportunity to see the best in northern European filmmaking. \nThe 2018 New York Baltic Film Festival is presented Scandinavia House and organized by the Consulate General of Estonia\, Consulate General of Lithuania and Consulate of Latvia in New York. Programming support is from the Estonian Film Institute\, National Film Center of Latvia\, and Lithuanian Film Center. Funding for the festival is courtesy of governments of the Estonia\, Latvia\, and Lithuania and by the generous donations of members of the Baltic community in New York. Additional support to the festival is from the Lithuanian Cultural Institute\, the Consulate General of Finland in New York\, and the American Scandinavian Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Animation Block Party
DESCRIPTION:In 2003-04\, Casey Safron was hosting animation screenings in downtown Manhattan. These pre-YouTube era events quickly grew in popularity. Safron’s college roommate owned a coffee shop in East Williamsburg called The Archive that had access to a screen down the block. The first official Animation Block Party took place on Sept. 9\, 2004. \nIn 2005\, Animation Block Party (ABP) received corporate sponsorship and began working with the Brooklyn Academy of Music. ABP partnered with Rooftop Films in 2006 and evolved into a four day festival as attendance grew by thousands each July. Over the past 15 years\, ABP has presented holiday events for Valentine’s\, Halloween\, etc.\, and hosted showcases in cities ranging from Stockholm to London\, New Orleans and Los Angeles. \nAnimation Block Party’s 15th annual summerfest is July 26-29\, 2018

SUMMARY:Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Studio Ghibli Festival!
DESCRIPTION:NAUSICAA\, the debut film from Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki tells the story of a young princess\, both brave and innocent\, whose love for all living things and passion for understanding the processes of nature lead her into danger\, sacrifice\, and eventual triumph. Set in a devastated future world decimated by atmospheric poisons and swarming with gigantic insects\, there is no good or evil\, but rather conflicting viewpoints\, weaknesses\, and power struggles. Considered to be his best masterpiece\, Miyazaki’s NAUSICAA is awe-inspiring and not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Cartoon Carnival 68: Queer Here
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to sit back and relax for nearly two hours of more archival 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s to the 1940s\, straight from the Stathes Archives to that secret silver screen in Bushwick… \nJune is Pride Month! For the first time in its nine year run\, the Tommy Stathes Cartoon Carnival showcases an under-acknowledged population in animation’s past. \nThroughout history\, derogatory stereotyping of minority groups has been recurring theme in popular culture and the mainstream media. Animated films were certainly no exception\, and a large portion of animation history is plagued with denigrating material. In addition to the overt racism and sexism present in a lot of early animation\, characters meant to represent members of the queer/transgender community were occasionally included in cameo appearances—serving as tropes\, stereotypes\, and tokens\, without contributing much to a film’s plot. In a couple of other cases\, these characters were headliners—a certain famous bunny comes to mind—although this aspect of their identities\, while blatant and sometimes narrative-driving\, went mostly unaddressed in open dialogues until recent years.  \nThis special Pride edition of the Cartoon Carnival is respectfully curated by and for LGBTQIA+ individuals as well as their allies. Locking our difficult history away in vaults or completely erasing it helps no one. Some of these problematic images and attitudes are sadly not relegated only to the past\, either. So\, come on out with your loved ones as we focus on this obscure area of animation history\, while hopefully reclaiming it in a positive light for a community that needs all the support it can get…every month of the year. \nBar refreshments and light food available (i.e. hot dogs\, hamburgers\, etc.) —Support the venue!— \nShow tix $10 at the door. Doors at 6pm.\n~Arrive on time for good seats~
