SUMMARY:GRUNT! An exhibition of works by Elliot Cowan - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Award winning International artist\, animator and film maker Elliot Cowan invites you to attend the opening of his first solo show GRUNT! in the United States. \nElliot presents a collection of paintings\, drawings\, sculptures\, and digital illustrations that chart 10 years of an Australian living in Queens and traveling through the Complicated States of America. \nImages inspired by traveling though the south\, New England and time spent in Philadelphia\, as well as a series of Australian iconography\, including tributes to Paul Kelly\, Deborah Conway and Mr Squiggle. \nhttp://www.elliotelliotelliot.com/ \nOpening reception is April 20 at 6pm and the show runs until May 13.\nThere will be drinks and nibbles and speeches and some other fun things to do.\nChildren very welcome. \nFlushing Town Hall is minutes away from the Flushing Main Street stations of both the subway and the LIRR. \nMore info here:\nhttp://www.flushingtownhall.org/event/82af25a5910223697da497e617977b55 \nGRUNT!\nGrunting is an important part of my artistic process.\nWhen I’m dragging cardboard out of the closet I give a grunt.\nIf I’m reaching across the table to drag my knife through the paper I give a grunt.\nEvery time I drop something on the floor I grunt to pick it up.\nIf I can’t unscrew the lid of the ink I gave a might grunt when I open it.\nWhen I finish a piece and I like it\, I give a satisfied grunt.\nIf it’s not coming together I give an annoyed grunt.\nOf course a “grunt” is often seen as an unskilled worker at the bottom of the ladder\, but without grunts doing all the heavy lifting then nothing would get done and I’m happy to be included in that group of diggers and haulers.\nI am also an immiGRUNT.\nAnd I am the child of immigrants.\nAnd my wife is the daughter of immigrants and my own children are the children of generations of immigrants.\nEven my parents are the grandchildren of immigrants.\nAnd all of the work in this show was done in Queens\, the world capitol of immigrants. \nAbout Flushing Town Hall:\nThe mission of Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts (FCCA) is to present multi-disciplinary global arts that engage and educate the global communities of Queens\, New York and New York City\, New York\, in order to foster mutual appreciation. As advocates of arts equity since 1979\, we support local\, immigrant\, national\, and international artists\, developing partnerships and collaborations that enhance our efforts.  \nAs a member of New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group (CIG)\, we serve as stewards of Flushing Town Hall\, restoring\, managing and programming the historic 1862 landmark on behalf of the City of New York. FCCA celebrates the history of Queens as the home of Jazz\, by presenting the finest in Jazz performance. We are committed to arts education and hands-on learning\, for the arts-curious\, arts enthusiasts\, and professional artists. We serve one of the most diverse communities in the world\, and strive to uphold the legacy of inclusiveness that has defined our community since the Flushing Remonstrance of 1657. \nOur Vision is to foster artistic excellence and innovation. We bring audiences together via high-quality arts exposure and experiences through programs in Jazz\, classical and world music\, theater\, dance and spoken word\, family and education programs\, senior programs\, exhibitions and free community events. Our multi-disciplinary programming reflects the diversity of our local community\, while introducing audiences to new art forms and genres\, and providing opportunities for artists to celebrate their traditional arts and create new work. \nFlushing Town Hall building mission Starting in 1990\, FCCA began a 9-year\, $8 Million restoration of historic Flushing Town Hall (FTH)\, a landmark (1862) owned by the City of New York\, transforming it into a thriving multi-disciplinary arts center that includes a 308-seat theater\, gallery\, garden\, classroom and rehearsal space. FCCA joined New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group (CIG) in 1995; part of its mission is to act as a steward of this historic building on behalf of the city. FCCA is also a Smithsonian Affiliate. In 2013 FCCA completed new renovations of the exterior garden and front portico of Flushing Town Hall\, and in 2014 completed an extensive interior renovation project\, which included new flooring in the 1st floor lobbies and gift shop\, new Heating\, Ventilation and Aair Conditioning (HVAC) systems\, and new floors\, seats\, risers\, and painting of the 2nd floor theater. \nFCCA bridges the past and present of Queens: Since its founding\, FCCA has been recognized as the foremost presenter of Jazz in Queens\, a borough that was the residence of many of the 20th century’s greatest Jazz artists\, including Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Dizzy Gilespie\, Billie Holiday\, Benny Goodman\, Charles Mingus\, Count Basie\, John Coltrane\, and many more. FCCA celebrates this legacy not only with regular Jazz concerts featuring the masters of today\, but also through the Queens Jazz Trail Map\, which it developed\, through the Queens Jazz Orchestra\, which it founded\, and through regular Jazz Jams and clinics to train the next generation of artists.  \nAt the same time\, FCCA’s programming has evolved with the community around it\, with an increased focus on the arts and cultures of China and Korea in particular. To address these growing populations in the neighborhood\, FCCA has formed a Chinese Cultural Committee and a Korean Cultural Committee. FCCA has also expanded its programming to include arts from Latin America and South Asia. The hallmark of FCCA’s current programming is a cross-cultural focus: works that fuse or bridge different cultures\, as well as larger programs that bring together presentations of art forms from different parts of the world. This approach aims to engage diverse audiences in appreciation of each others’ rich cultural heritage\, fostering a mutual respect and understanding that can help to build community\, in an environment in which people from all over the globe share the same space.

DESCRIPTION:Facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/225305618027375/ \nMake Pictures: Wednesday March 21 – Sunday March 25\nGallery Hours: Wednesday – Saturday\, 11 AM – 6 PM & Sunday 12 – 6 PM\nbitforms gallery\, 131 Allen St.\, New York\, NY 10002 \nOpening Reception: Wednesday March 21\, 6 – 8 PM\nCasey Reas and Jeffrey Alan Scudder in Conversation: Saturday March 24\, 2:30 PM \nbitforms gallery is pleased to present Make Pictures\, featuring four web-based drawing and animation tools commissioned by GIPHY Arts and curated by artist Jeffrey Alan Scudder. Works on view and available to use include Sketch Machine by Casey Reas\, Extinctr by Harm van den Dorpel\, Eyemall by Withering Systems\, and Boopy by Andrew Benson. Pictures created by gallery visitors using the tools will be displayed in the gallery for the duration of the show. \nSketch Machine by Casey Reas is an open source software for creating freehand animations in real time or frame by frame. The user can draw with different colored points\, lines\, and planes and modify qualities of the animation such as jitter\, speed\, and playback. Animations can be exported as GIFs and circulated online. Sketch Machine is created within the tradition of direct animation works by Len Lye and Stan Brakhage and exploratory drawing software like Kid Pix and TURUX.  \nExtinctr is a pixel sorting algorithm and web tool by Harm van den Dorpel that accepts any image as input\, and outputs an animated vertical decomposition of that image into a pixelated mound. The user can control the speed of the dismantling procedure (scatter) and record any duration of the process to export as a GIF. \nThe Eyemall is a toy by Withering Systems for creating an exquisite corpse from a curated\, tagged selection of human body-part GIFs in GIPHY’s database. Hands\, eyes\, noses\, sweaters\, shorts\, knees\, lips\, and other body parts come together to form an interactive marionette-like figure; a single body made from disparate GIF parts.  \nBoopy is a drawing tool by Andrew Benson developed in response to the question “What would it be like if\, as you are drawing\, the canvas was looping?” Boopy allows the user to build complex\, layered\, repeating patterns from different textured brushes. It also includes a webcam feature that allows a user to reveal their image by erasing a layer with animated strokes. \n— \nCasey REAS writes software to explore emergent systems. His work brings together conceptualism\, systems theory\, experimental film and animation\, and drawing. While software is at the core of his practice\, his work spans installation\, works on paper\, and live performance. Reas has been featured in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, San Francisco\, SF; Art Institute of Chicago\, Chicago\, IL; Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles\, CA; Centre Georges Pompidou\, Paris\, France; Victoria and Albert Museum\, London\, England; MIT Museum\, Cambridge\, MA; Institute of Contemporary Art\, Boston\, MA; Eyebeam\, New York\, NY; Ars Electronica\, Linz\, Austria; Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie Karlsruhe\, Karlsruhe\, Germany\, and others. Reas is the co-creator\, with Ben Fry\, of Processing\, an open source programming language and environment. The project was initiated in 2001. \nHarm van den Dorpel lives and works in Berlin. Selected (group) exhibitions include the New Museum in New York\, MoMa PS1 in New York\, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing\, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw\, Museum Kurhaus Kleve\, ZKM Karlsruhe\, and the Netherlands Media Art Institute in Amsterdam. In 2015\, Van den Dorpel started Left Gallery\, an online gallery that commissions\, produces\, and sells downloadable files. \nWithering Systems is a small software label and umbrella for the collaborative projects of Katie Rose Pipkin and Loren Schmidt\, based in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. They aim to bring quiet and unusual digital experiences to the public in unlikely places\, such as on social media\, in printed material\, or on the street. Past work includes inflorescence.city\, the moth generator\, luminous corridor\, as well as many other small games\, print projects\, and plant-growth simulations. \nAndrew Benson lives in Los Angeles\, formerly San Francisco\, and works primarily in time-based (often realtime) digital media. His practice incorporates 3D animation\, experimental and process-driven video\, software development\, interactive technologies\, web programming. He comes from a painting and music background and started working with experimental graphics and video as an outgrowth of performing at noise shows.  \nJeffrey Alan Scudder\, born in 1989\, lives and works in Berkeley\, CA where he spends his time programming and making pictures. Since 2017 he has presented 18 Radical Digital Painting lectures often in collaboration with other artists\, at various venues including ZKM Karlsruhe\, RISD\, Harvard\, Yale\, Temple University\, Rutgers\, and UMASS. He has taught at UCLA and Parsons School for Design and worked at the design studio Linked by Air. Scudder received an MFA in sculpture from Yale University School of Art in 2013. \nGIPHY Arts is a subsidiary of GIPHY\, the GIF search engine.
