The “Copyright 101” will be presented by Elissa Hecker\, Contributor of the legal chapters of “The Profitable Artist”. The workshop will take place online on Tuesday\, November 20\, 6:30pm-8pm EST. \nAs a creator\, it is important to be able to make a living from the hard work you devote to your original works of authorship. You should have the right to control what others can and cannot do with your works\, with a few exceptions. Often\, however\, the legal and business aspects of what to do with art before\, during\, and after it is created will depend on Copyright law. A creator’s copyrights are part of a bundle from which an artist can\, among other things\, license\, sell\, transfer\, and/or assign\, any number of rights to another. \nThis Copyright 101 workshop will provide an introduction to the basics of U.S. Copyright law. It will also focus on many types of licensing and the fair use defense. \nIf you create\, use\, appropriate\, produce\, commission… then this workshop is for you. \nPresenter\nElissa D. Hecker practices in the fields of copyright\, trademark and business law. Her clients encompass a large spectrum of the entertainment and corporate worlds. \nElissa is a repeat Super Lawyer\, Top 25 Westchester Lawyers\, recipient of the IP Excellence Award for Best Trademark Attorney of 2018 (New York)\, and recipient of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A.’s (CSUSA) inaugural Excellent Service Award. \nIn addition to her private practice\, Elissa is also a Past Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) Entertainment\, Arts and Sports Law (EASL) Section\, Co-Chair and creator of EASL’s Pro Bono Committee\, Editor of the EASL Journal and Blog\, Co-Editor of the books Entertainment Litigation\, Counseling Content Providers in the Digital Age\, and In the Arena\, Chair of the Board of Directors for Dance/NYC\, a member and former Trustee of CSUSA\, and Assistant Editor and a member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of the CSUSA. \nTechnology Requirement\nYou may attend this webinar using either a Mac or PC computer (with speakers)\, standard phone\, smartphone\, or tablet device. \nPlease use the AnyMeeting App or Chrome for the best webinar experience. \nMake sure your Adobe Flash Player plugin is up-to-date. A strong wifi or hard-wired Internet connection is preferred. \nFor additional technical questions or issues\, please email at learning@nyfa.org. \nRecording\nThis workshop will be recorded.
