Animation Show of Shows

Animation Show of Shows

Every year, Ron Diamond, of Acme Filmworks and Animation World Network, treats the animation community to a special screening of the year’s best animated films.  This screening tours throughout the United States, and gives those of us in the animation industry a chance to see films we might not see otherwise.  Every year, I am inspired by the vast array of talent displayed in these films, and this year was no different.  The films curated span all types of animation, and superbly highlight the variety of forms animation can take. If you have a chance to see these at a film festival coming up or on DVD, I would highly recommend it.  Highlights for me this year included Pixar’s new short, La Luna, which due to its impending release I will refrain on commenting upon, except to say it’s delightful.  I also really loved Wild Life by Canadian Animators Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, which I have seen 3 times now, twice being at Ottawa.  It’s a wonderful commentary on the aspiring British cowboy of the Canadian plains rendered in beautiful strokes.  Sure to make you laugh is Mobile by Director Verena Fels, and sure to make you bop...

Karen Aqua

Karen Aqua

Article by Tristian Goik. I still find it difficult to wrap my head around a world where you might be lucky to have one opportunity a year to see multiple animated films.  This is what Linda Simensky (V.P. of Children’s Programming at PBS) described at the Karen Aqua retrospective and Q&A, held by ASIFA-East on October 11th.  She coveted her attendances of The International Tournée of Animation, where she would get to see about 20 animations, and since the 1980s, Karen Aqua almost always submitted one film.  In this extremely new age of YouTube, these facts are hard to swallow, and after watching about 12 Aqua animations in a row I was exhausted by the devastatingly elegant displays of talent and art. The screening covered Aqua’s work from 1982 to the present.   They were divided up into three sections and introduced by the three panelists: Ken Fields (her husband and musician) introduced her early work, Frank Mouris (independent animator and long time friend) introduced some pieces about rural/urban environments, and finally Linda Simensky introduced Aqua’s last films before her death.  Debra Solomon (independent animator), also organized the event and made opening remarks.   At the end, there was a photo...

2011 ASIFA-East Open Screening

Article by Emmett Goodman. It’s the start of a new season for ASIFA-East. For this author, as well as many others, this new season is particularly special, as it is the first with our new president, Linda Beck. Linda, who had previously been the ASIFA-East secretary, has succeeded David B. Levy after an 11-year run. It is a new era for us. Grand intro finished, we now move on to the topic of this article, the annual ASIFA-East Open Screening. The ASIFA-East season usually opens and closes with two events: the Open Screening in September, and the annual ASIFA-East festival in May. And I agree. These are the two events where members and non-members get to share their own animated works. The Open Screening is for feedback on the progress of one’s work, and the Festival is to compete with one’s work. The Open Screening, however, cannot be judged cohesively or clearly, as most of the works presented are incomplete and still in-progress. There is no submission process, hence the “Open” part of the title. Attendees simply arrive with a DVD copy of their work. What we can judge are the general trends amongst the films. The general mood...

ASIFA-East discount for Rooftop Film Festival!

May 23, 2011

rooftop_logo_414x227

It’s almost summer and that means Rooftop Films is projecting films on rooftops throughout New York City.  This year’s festival features many animated shorts and our pals at Rooftop sent us a run-down.  They are also offering ASIFA-East members a discount to the festival shows.  Please look for the discount code in our weekly email newsletter.  Hope you enjoy the shows!! Wednesday, May 25th – New Date DARK ‘TOONS From Road Runner to The Simpsons, animated films have always been good at finding fun in the dark and twisted. It’s easier to embrace life’s awful absurdities when we don’t have to watch them happening to real, live people (or dogs). Of course, sometimes the attraction is the spectacle an inspired animator can create: the sheer, over-the-top train-wreck momentum of things going horribly wrong – an over-protective pooch’s gauntlet of challenges in Guard Dog Global Jam or the snowballing rush to Armageddon in Enrique Wrecks the World. Lots of things go brilliantly wrong in this program of shorts – some thrilling, some unsettling, all utterly unique. Venue: On the pier at Solar One, 2420 FDR Drive (E 23rd Street and the East River New York, NY 10010 Subway: R/6 to...
