This week, we are gearing up for ASIFA-East’s ultimate event, the annual ASIFA-East Animation Festival and Awards Ceremony. In preparation and celebration, the Viewseum will be looking back at a few previous winners. The Rauch Brothers, Mike and Tim, calmly entered the New York animation scene. And in just a short period, they took ASIFA-East, the animation community and the festival circuit by storm with their beautiful collaborations with StoryCorps. Q & A is the Rauch Brothers’ second StoryCorps adaptation, right after their short German In The Woods. This short follows Joshua Littman, a 7th Grader (at the time) diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, interviewing his mother, Sarah Littman. Asperger’s Syndrome is a form of autism and Joshua’s questions for his mother naturally exhibit some of the traits attributed to Asperger’s, such as his hyper-focus on animals, lack in social abilities, and extreme thought put into simple questions. The Rauch Brothers’ animation style is very unique. Their shorts are known for very playful character design, lush color pallets, and expressionistic backgrounds. And yet for all their style’s playfulness and charm, it surprises and succeeds in displaying the various emotions and serious subject matter discussed by StoryCorps’ interviewees. The last 40...
Article by Caresse Singh. I had known Mike Rauch for a while from ASIFA events and he’d always struck me as a down to Earth, relatable and approachable guy. I learnt even more about him and his brother, Tim, at the April 20th ASIFA event, which shined a spotlight on the Rauch Brothers. Listening to them talk (sometimes interrupting each other) made me laugh to myself as I fondly remembered creative endeavors with my own sisters. Their bond as brothers, they’ve admitted, is a big part of why the Rauch Brothers have managed to stay strong as creative partners. The Rauch Brothers techniques, positive attitude and open mindedness have helped them to gain success in an industry so often full of technical, creative and monetary limitations. For those few of you who don’t know the Rauch Brothers, they are the masterminds behind the animated shorts at StoryCorps. To find out more about their history, check out their website at www.rauchbrothers.com. In their presentation at the ASIFA event, they went into depth about their development process and the various lessons they’ve learnt. What they explained revealed them to be creative problem solvers, who, instead of playing victim to exigent circumstances, worked every...

This week I had the pleasure of chatting with Signe Baumane who sent along scans from the DOK International Leipzig Festival for documentary and animated catalog. This years program has a bright spotlight on some of New York’s animated favorites, a retrospective of Signe Baumane and master class with Bill Plympton. The Program also featured some big apple darlings; the Rauch Bros, Gary Lieb, Arthur Metcalf, Adam Ansorge, and recent west coast transplant Pes. Signe and Bill also had a great turn out for their own screening/show/competition Battle of the Sexes!! shown in Video HERE as well as the scans from the catalog of the Battle of the Sexes in Leipzig
