Life In Transition by John R. Dilworth

Warning: or just a suggestion, we insist you watch the film before reading on. Really take in the effect of the film. Life In Transition is John R. Dilworth’s opus. Described as “…a visual and symbolic journey depicting the continual transformations of life from birth to death to re-birth”, Life is a personal film that draws heavily from Dilworth’s life, career and knowledge. Not bad for a short film either. The film follows a character called the “Daisy Man”, set against a desert backdrop reminiscent of Salvador Dali’s surrealist paintings. The character’s face pervades the beginning of the piece before floating backwards to give life to his creations (including a few familiar faces, “dirty” and “cowardly” too). Beneath the surrealist imagery, Dilworth tells a very personal tale. The tale at first glance is of a creator giving life to his art, but gradually losing control of his life and the world around him. Every silly and bizarre image that animates has a meaning that carries it along. For example, the Daisy Man becomes pink and elastic for a few moments about one minute into the film. This is meant to show the character’s free-spiritedness and youthful energy. After celebrating...

John Dilworth’s Irrational Reactions

John Dilworth’s Irrational Reactions

Article written by Emmett Goodman. On Thursday night, September 23, filmmaker John R. Dilworth presented a show of his animated films at 92Y Tribeca. The title of this show is Irrational Reactions. Recently, I have seen two of John Dilworth’s previous showings. One, which I previously wrote about back in November, was something of a homecoming after two years abroad in Europe. The second was just months ago, near my home in Park Slope. The two shows each had a different theme. The first felt like a retrospective of John himself. The second revolved around the theme of the animator playing god. This one was called Irrational Reactions, so I just had to see what was different about this one. John opened up the show by coming forth, and announcing that the show had been cancelled. I must admit, I almost fell for that, and felt slightly disappointed. But after a second of believing it, I noticed John was still grinning and much of the audience was starting to giggle. My friend sitting next to me immediately quoted a line from Courage the Cowardly Dog, and after holding his famous grin for a few more moments, John announced that...

Review of “The Animation of John Dilworth”

Article by Caresse Singh. I was a little nervous when I got out of the cab. The facade of 543 Union Street did not exactly scream “gallery.” I wondered for a moment if this was some sort of practical joke. Or maybe, it was like a page out of “Harry Potter” and I had to knock on the brick wall in a certain way to find the entrance. To my relief, two other guests soon arrived for this same event and were also puzzled as to how to get in. Following the suggestion of a stranger and a note on the door, we turned the corner, went up an alley-way and there we found Observatory. We were greeted by the kind smile of Joanna Ebenstein – a key figure in the creation of Observatory. As we waited for the presentation to begin, we made our introductions and looked around the space. The entrance area was thoughtfully covered with artwork of varying mediums. Among some of the most memorable pieces was a long orange knitted scarf hung across the ceiling and extending down into a bundle on the floor, with pictures of its’ many contributing knitters in a glass case...

An Evening with John R. Dilworth

Article by Emmett Goodman. This wasn’t a typical ASIFA-East event. The only thing that made this seem like an ASIFA-East event was it took place in the SVA amphitheatre. This was more theatrical. More unpredictable. This was somewhere inside the mind of animator/director John R. Dilworth. Here, the ideas of silliness and anarchy couldn’t have been more realistic. John R. Dilworth is one of my idols. I knew his name first before any other New York animator (due in no small part to watching Courage the Cowardly Dog as a kid). The style of that show is so unique and surreal. You can’t predict anything, unless you’ve seen a particular episode more than once. The day I first learned of ASIFA-East, I also learned that Dilworth is an independent animator. I was (and still am) hooked onto his style, his timing, and his ideas. To start the evening off, Dave Levy reiterated a story from his first meeting with Dilworth. Dave remembered an early adventure right out of school. The details were a little mixed, but Dave recalled being very sad, and then he encountered Dilworth, who said something to cheer Dave up: “GET THE F**K OUT OF HERE!!!”...
