The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven 3D

Article by Tristian Goik. The New York International Children’s Film Festival added several surprise screenings, and I opted to buy a ticket for “The Monkey King,” so I could enjoy a nice 3D movie without the hassle of having to help other people.  I love being a volunteer, don’t get me wrong, but I decided to cut through the moral red tape of the situation by just putting some money down.  Also, have you ever sat in the seats at Walter Reade Theater?  Anyway, the movie that I expected to be a fun useless romp turned out to be a National Chinese Treasure and there was a Q&A with imported directors to boot. “The Monkey King: Uproar in Heaven” is a remake of the classic 1960s movie.  Wan Guchan and Wai Laiming were two of four Chinese animation brothers who created China’s first feature length animated film “Princess Iron Fan” (1941).  They were inspired by the recent release of Disney’s “Snow White” and the Wan brothers started to plan production on “The Monkey King.”  Unfortunately for them, history got in the way.  It wasn’t until after the 2nd...

TIME-LINE (SVA & NYU Animation) by Robert Lyons and company.

Time-Line 3

Warning: One of these segments includes frontal nudity, but simplified. Probably nothing to get offended over. I love anijams. Whatever or however the grouping works, I love seeing how different artists can be from one another, even with the same guidelines in mind. It’s an excellent project for animation students, and Robert Lyons has proven that here with a 9 minute collection of short animations by various students.             Created by over 40 students, across 8 years, from 2 different schools, Time-Line was an ongoing project in Lyons’s continuing education classes. Begun in SVA (1993-1997) and completed in NYU (2000-2001), each student had to begin and end their individual animation the same way, with a black line bisecting a white frame horizontally.             The idea of beginning and ending with a single line allows plenty of space to improvise. There is some wonderfully imaginative visuals going on here, and there is a distinctiveness to most of them which in turn distinguishes not only each artist’s abilities, but also their own ways of thinking. For example, some artists choose to have the line become part of a structure such as...

Student Night

March 15, 2012
By

It’s that time of year where the members of ASIFA-East judge the submissions to the annual animation festival. The Student Films jury screening brings attention of sorts to trends amongst animation schools and students. Animation schools, it seems, each have a certain reputation for certain kinds of films and thesis. Sometimes, it’s the students who go against these reputations who succeed in standing out from the rest. But something else that sometimes goes unnoticed are the types of storytelling and processes that appear to be trending amongst animation students. Now bear in mind, this only covers the student films submitted to ASIFA-East festival, not all films from all animation schools in the U.S. and abroad. These aren’t fashion trends. But at the very least, it gives us a good idea of what trends amongst the New York and Philadelphia schools. For example, last year, there seemed to be popularity amongst monologue films and stories about maintaining relationships through social networks. Most of this year’s submissions came from Philadelphia’s University of the Arts (U-Arts), with a total of 14 films. Pratt Institute and NYU Tisch each had five submissions this year. A few came from School of Visual Arts (SVA),...

Commissioned, Educational, Experimental, and Music Video Night

March 15, 2012
By

Article by Caresse Singh. The Commissioned/Educational/Experimental/Music Video jury night was a night dedicated to worthy causes. From explaining the process of the water cycle, to relaying the heroic tragedy of two of NY’s finest, and ending with an anthem of metal, the night ran the full gamut of the entertainment spectrum. Some of the regulars were up for judgment, with films that you may have already seen circulating this year. Most of the commissioned films were of the Educational/Children’s variety while some were promotional pieces. In all, most of the Commissioned Films were 2D animations, with the exception of 1 ad (digital compositing) and 3 stop motion pieces. The Experimental section included the renovation of an old classic, twitter references and a multi-artist mash up among many other dazzling pieces. Music Videos led us through a visual journey of stop motion, live action, digital compositing and good ol’ drawn 2D animation. If you missed it, you definitely missed a great screening, but never fear because you can check out the Awards Ceremony and see some of the top ranking films! And if you missed your chance to compete, then complete that film (or start animating) and catch the next...

Independent Night

March 14, 2012
By

I always love attending the juror screening for the Independent Category of the annual ASIFA-East Animated Film Festival.  Here’s a night when you can come and enjoy watching all sorts of new and exciting independent films unencumbered by the rules of the advertising and television world.   A night devoted solely to the artist’s creativity.  We had a great turnout for our last evening of judging, and I’ll just highlight a few trends of the evening’s films.  Can we say animals?  Lots and lots of animals.  Talking ones.  Silent Ones.  Furry ones.  Cute ones.   Oh and deer – animators love deer.  Lots and lots of non-linear narratives, as well as films in a series, and a few compilations of a number of animated shorts by different animators.   Social issues were vividly portrayed and loved ones remembered.  All in all, a fun night indeed.  The winners in this category and others will be announced at our awards ceremony on April 29th.  Stay tuned for details.

Kickstarting Poe: an Independent Feature from Michael Sporn

It’s not often that we can be a part of a feature project, unless we’re one of the artists behind the film.  That’s one of the amazing things about Kickstarter – it allows one to play a small but ever so crucial role in bringing an idea to life.  Here’s one such campaign from one of New York’s finest filmmakers, Michael Sporn.  Dave Levy has written a wonderful article on the campaign, for his Animondays blog, which says it much better than I can.  Please help bring Poe to the big screen! To learn more about the campaign: Poe Project: A Kickstarter Campaign.
