Couple of quick updates brought to our attention:

From our friends at VanArts: Last call for the Story, Character & Animation Masterclass in New York City! Taught by instructors from Pixar Animation Studios.

The class starts THIS FRIDAY, June 14th! We have a nice large group coming, and this will be an incredible 3-day extended class, featuring special guest instructor Rick Nierva. If you are planning on attending, please register *as soon as possible* since we are now making the final arrangements and registrations will soon be closing.

ASIFA-East Summer Hiatus

Say what? ASIFA-East is officially on hiatus for the summer! Much love and thanks to everyone on the ASIFA-East Board for all your hard work and dedication this year! We’re taking a few months off to refresh our minds and enjoy the summer with family and friends. We’ll be back in September.

Figure Drawing will go on through June and July. There will be no classes in August. If you have ideas for an event next year or for a new feature on the website or blog, we’d love to hear from you!

New York International Children’s Film Festival Accepting Submissions!

Our friends at GKids want you let you know that the New York International Children’s Film Festival–North America’s Largest Film Festival for Children and Teens–is now accepting submissions for the 2014 Festival running March 7 – 30, 2014! They are an Oscar Qualifying festival with an esteemed jury panel consisting of award-winning filmmakers and actors such as: Gus Van Sant, Susan Sarandon, James Schamus, Mathew Modine and more. The early deadline for shorts is September 15. The early deadline for feature length films is October 15. The forms are below.

Rooftop Films This Weekend

On June 7, Rooftop presents a night of eerie and mysterious short films. Preceding the shorts, world-renowned pianist Bruce Levingston will perform Phillip Glass’ “Dracula” over a presage of short films.

On June 8th The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscars® Outdoors Summer Series, RADiUS-TWC and Rooftop Films will present a FREE screening of the widely anticipated “Twenty Feet from Stardom,” RADiUS-TWC’s hit film which premiered at Sundance. The film, which opens June 14th, shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Following the screening there will be a live performance by Darlene Love, one of the main subjects of the film, and a Q&A with the director Morgan Neville. This screening is presented in partnership with: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscars® Outdoors Summer Series, RADiUS-TWC.

Following each screening there will be an after-party sponsored by Red Stripe at Fontana’s.

NYS Health Benefits Exchange

Hello! I was recently contacted by a volunteer involved in the New York State Health Benefits Exchange which will provide affordable health insurance for the under-insured and uninsured. They are reaching out to artist organizations in an effort to help get the word out about the upcoming exchange program. Access to affordable health insurance is a huge issue for the animation community.

Much of the information I provide here is taken directly from the NYS Health Benefits Exchange website. Please bookmark and refer to that site for more information.

NYS will be setting up an organized marketplace (Exchange) designed to help people shop for and enroll in health insurance coverage. Individuals, families and small businesses will be able to use the Exchange to help them compare commercial insurance options, calculate costs and select coverage online, in person, over the phone or by mail. The Exchange will also help people to check their eligibility for health care programs like Medicaid and sign up for these programs if they are eligible. The Exchange will also be able to tell what type of financial assistance is available to applicants to help them afford health insurance purchased through the Exchange. Insurance coverage can be purchased through the Health Benefit Exchange beginning in October 2013 and will be effective January 1, 2014.
